《绝地战警》REVIEW: Bad Boys for Life《绝地战警：疾速追击》影评By Jami PhilbrickOpening in U.S. theaters on January 17th is Bad Boys for Life, which is the third film in the Bad Boys franchise. The movie will be released twenty-five years after the original, Bad Boys, and seventeen years after its sequel, Bad Boys II. Once again produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Beverly Hills Cop), the film is directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Black), who take over for the departed Michael Bay. Reprising their roles as Miami police detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, respectively, are Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Also returning as Mike and Marcus’ boss is Joe Pantoliano and joining the cast for the first time is Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Charles Melton, and Paoloa Nunez. Six months later, he returns to the job to discover that Marcus has retired. Wanting to bring his assailant to justice, Mike joins a special police squad known as AMMO, led by his ex-girlfriend Rita (Nunez). After several more assassinations, including the death of someone close to them, Marcus agrees to come out of retirement one last time to help Mike and AMMO take down the assassin. However, Mike and Marcus soon realize that the shooter has significant ties to Mike’s past. I did love buddy-cop movies, but my problem with the original is that it didn’t lean in to the buddy-cop trope enough, and instead had this bizarre sub-plot about a criminal informant who had mistaken Marcus for Mike. Bad Boys II was even worse, with a completely incoherent plot, and too many explosions, as well as misogynistic and homophobic humor. So, imagine my surprise when I sat down for Bad Boys for Life and realized that the movie was actually pretty good. The film focuses on the main characters of Mike and Marcus, and their relationship together, and what it means for these two “Bad Boys” to be growing old. The humor that comes out of those ideas is very funny and relatable. Paola Nunez is great as the AMMO leader and Mike’s ex, Rita, and I would love to see a film that focuses more on her character. The rest of the team is somewhat generic, but Vanessa Hudgens and Alexander Ludwig do stand-out. There is a reveal at the end of the film regarding the main antagonist that I won’t spoil, but it was clearly added for a possible sequel. I’m not sure that that storyline would be enough for another movie, but it certainly was a good twist that helped the film cement its theme of family. In fact, it may have just been the film’s Miami location, or the constant mention of “family” that reminded me a lot of Fast Five, which was the movie that reinvented the Fast and Furious franchise, making it the popular series that it is today. Its undeniable that these two actors have an electric chemistry together, and that is on full display here. They really like each other, and that bleeds into the characters’ relationship. To be honest, I’ve never been a big fan of Martin Lawrence, and thought his performance in Bad Boys II was borderline ridiculous, but I have to say, he really shines in Bad Boys for Life. Lawrence is hilarious and has some of the funniest lines in the movie, while at the same time, has some wonderful dramatic moments and I was really impressed with his work. Will Smith, for his part, does exactly what you need Will Smith to do, which is be Will Smith! The actor brings his trademark movie-star swagger to the role and helps legitimize the action by doing so. But Smith is not playing the Mike Lowrey from 1995’s Bad Boys, he is playing an over-fifty Mike Lowrey, who is coming to terms with his own mortality.
